I had to because I needed VR and got the Tamron 70-200/2.8 VC to replace it. Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 I've heard that the 80-200 AF-S had some focus motor issues. I'd probably skip it and look elsewhere. If you need f/2.8 and don't want to pay Nikon 70-200/2.8 prices, then seriously consider the Tamron 70-200/2.8 VC G2.
Nikon 70-300mm VR. OVERALL. It performs better than any of the previous 70-300mm lenses. This is the lens to get if your subjects hold still. If you need to shoot moving things in lower light, get the faster 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-D instead. If size, weight and cost are no object (they are for me), get the 70-200mm VR or 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II.

The 70-200mm is a no-brainer for sports. Although it is nice to have a second body with a wide lens, that camera spends 98% of the event unused, while the workhorse does its thing. The 70-200mm is a mainstay for sports photography. Being able to quickly zoom out to 70mm allowed me to grab this shot.

l9Ll3. Makes a real difference. The 70-200 VR II has the best build quality I have ever seen. Its really built to take whatever you dish out and last. The F 2.8 speed is a bright enough lens to use a 1.4 or 2.0 teleconverter quite handily to give you 320 or 400 mm focal lengths. The F4 lens is a bit too slow for teleconverters.
Nikon 18-200 f/2.8 VR II Sigma 18-200 f/2.8 VC Nikon 18-200 f/4 VRIII Used Nikon 80-200 f/2.8 AF-D. I think I'm learning towards the f/4, but I'm have a hard time deciding whether I'm better of just waiting until I can afford the VRII rather than settling.

I had the F mount Holy Trinity and then got the 24-70 f2.8E VR and the 70-200 f2.8E FL VR as well as a multitude of other top spec Nikon lenses like the 400 f2.8E FL VR etc. I have almost completely sold out of all F mount gear and am now wholly with Z mount with the Z7II and Z9 but have kept the 400 f2.8E FL VR, 500 f5.6 PF and the 105 f1.4E.
Amazonian Toucanets. In late 2012 I decided to buy a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens and coupled it with my new D7100. My hope was that the sharpness and versatility would outmatch my 55-300mm mounted on my D5100. Regrettably, I was in budget mode and opted for the $800 Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di IF. Although brand new, it was an old design.
For my next RV trip to Oregon, Washington coast and Cascades, I consider to take this lens along instead of the AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II to go lighter on walks. Near the vehicle, it goes together with the 200-500 for the long end. (this time, my AF-S 80-400 G and the AF-S 300 f/2.8 and TC's are planned to stay home on my lens board)
